Case study: Cannibalistic mating in mantids
There are many reports of male mantids (Mantodea) being eaten by the female partner before, during, or after mating. There are even instances where the male is said to copulate more vigorously after removal of the movement inhibiting section of the brain. Once the female has attracted the male via pheromones and visual cues, they mate for an extended period of time, and upon completion she may consume him entirely if he fails to retreat hastily (Gullan & Cranston, 2005).
